Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The United States congratulated Indonesia on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its independence, which falls on August 17.

"On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I would like to send our best wishes to the Indonesian people on the 70th anniversary of your independence this August 17," US State Secretary John Kerry was quoted as saying by the US Embassy in Jakarta on its official website on Saturday.

He added that he knew from his own visit that Indonesia's thriving democracy, religious tolerance, diversity, and global leadership were fundamental to its success and served as an example for the Asia-Pacific region and the world.

"Through a comprehensive partnership, the United States and Indonesia have made a long-term commitment to strengthen bilateral ties and address regional and global challenges. This reflects the importance the United States places on its relationship with Indonesia as a leader in Asia and the world. I look forward to building even closer ties between our governments when President Jokowi visits the United States later this year," Kerry stated.

He also noted that the United States wishes all Indonesians around the world a joyous celebration and peace and prosperity over the coming year.
