Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The number of domestic air passengers rose by 13.51 percent in July, reaching 6.4 million compared to only 5.7 million in June 2105, Chief of the National Statistics Agency Suryamin stated here on Tuesday.

"This is the highest monthly figure recorded between January and July 2015. This figure used to be merely around five million," he noted at a press conference.

Suryamin pointed out that the hike indicated a steep increase in public interest in domestic air service.

"The number of international passengers rose 0.92 percent to reach 1.16 million from 1.15 million recorded before," he remarked.

During the period between January and July 2015, the number of domestic passengers reached 38.7 million, up by 18 percent, while the number of international passengers totaled 7.9 million, increasing by 0.70 percent compared to the same period last year.

With regard to domestic sea passengers, he noted that in July 2015, a total of 1.6 million passengers used sea service, up by 17.80 percent from 1.3 million in June.

The total cargo shipped during the period dropped 9.67 percent to 17.9 million tons.

For the period between January and July 2015, the number of sea passengers reached 8.4 million, up 16.04 percent from the same period last year, but the amount of goods shipped during the period declined by 1.73 percent to 130.4 million tons.

Suryamin stated that 27.6 million train passengers were recorded in July, increasing by 0.18 percent from 27.56 million in June.

The amount of cargo shipped by train dropped 4.53 percent to 2.7 million tons.

During the period between January and July 2015, a total of 184.4 million train passengers were recorded, up 18.83 percent compared to the same period last year, while the amount of cargo shipped by train declined 3.23 percent to 17.9 million tons.
