Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - A whirlwind destroyed dozens of houses in the district of Pangkajene Islands or Pangkep, South Sulawesi, following heavy rains.
An official said it was estimated that the calamity resulted in material losses that ran into billions of rupiah.
"As many as 47 houses were damaged due to the whirlwind in the last three days," chief of Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Safei Yasin said here on Friday, adding that there were no reports of anyone dying in the whirlwind.
According to him, the roofs and walls of many of the destroyed houses came crumbling down or went flying in all directions.
"Now, a rescue team is still making an inventory of the damage. Humanitarian assistance will be extended soon," Yasin explained.
Meanwhile, on Thursday (Dec 24), whirlwind also hit three villages in Mandalle sub-district, Pangkep District in South Sulawesi, which left 38 houses damaged. (*)
