"This is the only way to restore national unity as well as guarantee that good will and intent would help settle the problems of our nation," Abbas said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Mamoud Abbas affirmed that Palestine was seeking to form a new government based on national unity through a reconciliation agreement reached between the Fatah and Hamas factions in 2014.

The agreement has been followed up with a meeting between the two factions in Doha, Qatar, in February to discuss the formation of a unified government through a general election.

"This is the only way to restore national unity as well as guarantee that good will and intent would help settle the problems of our nation," he remarked in a speech at the opening of the 5th Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation here on Monday.

Abbas remarked that in the next two months, he would report the formation of a unified government to the United Nations Security Council.

President Joko Widodo had noted earlier that Indonesia was ready to help in the process of reconciliation in Palestine.

The president expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Palestine as was apparent by the several unilateral and illegal policies and collective punishments imposed by Israel that have created more difficulties for the people of Palestine.

"The people of Palestine are becoming more helpless. The humanitarian situation in the occupied areas is worsening," he pointed out.

"The situation must be dealt with together, and we must fight for the Palestinian cause. To fight we need unity. We must unite. Palestine must unite. Palestine must reconcile," he added.(*)
