Indonesian minister signals abolition of electricity subsidy

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Sudirman Said indicated that the government night soon abolish electricity subsidy.

"We already made verification. We already submitted report, waiting only for the decision of the president," the minister said here on Monday.

Sudirman said based on the verification there are 18 million of 22 million subscribers of the national power utility PLN not deserving electricity subsidy.

The data were provided by PLN and the National Team for Acceleration of Poverty Eradication, saying that only 4.1 million of the subscribers deserve subsidy, he said.

The minister, however, said he could not say when the subsidy would be lifted.

Earlier it was reported that the electricity subsidy would be lifted in July 2016 for subscribers using 900 volt ampere (VA) or more.

"It depends on the situation. It could be soon or later," the minister said.

The National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Eradication the subsidy would be abolished for 107,550 subscribers in Aceh and 497,000 subscribers in East Java.
