Bandung (ANTARA News) - Former president and chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Padjajaran, here, Wednesday.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla, several ministers, prominent national figures, and senior politicians of the PDIP, among others.

Megawati expressed pride and was moved on being awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa degree for politics and administration from the University of Padjajaran, her alma mater.

Megawati recalled when she became a student of the university 51 years ago.

The countrys fifth president said she was just 18 years when she joined the universitys faculty of agriculture in keeping with the wishes of her father, Indonesian first president Soekarno, though her true interest was in psychology.

Megawatis father believed that agriculture was crucial as farmers constituted most of the countrys population, and food sovereignty was vital for the nations survival.
