Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesias team preparing for the Asian Games 2018 has won two gold, one silver and one bronze medals at the Asian Rowing Championship in Azadi Lake in Tehran, Iran, and was ranked third.

Team manager Edy Suyono said in a press release received here on Monday that the achievements of Kakan Kusmana and his fellows at the championship were a matter of pride.

"This is a positive step for the Indonesian rowing team. Moreover, Indonesia will be the host of the Asian Games 2018. It must continuously improve its performance," he stated.

One of the gold medals came when Kakan Kusmana covered the 1,000 meter LM1X event clocking three minutes 28.599 seconds.

The second place was won by an athlete from North Korea, Ch Pak and the third by H Khedri from the host country.

The second gold medal for Indonesia came courtesy Arief and M Yakin who paired in the 1,000 meter LM2X event, finishing in three minutes, 13.097 seconds while Iran claimed the second place with its Iran 1 pair and the third place with its Iran 2 pair.

Indonesia won a silver medal after its woman rower Corputty finished second in the 1,000 meter LW1X event in three minutes 57.271 seconds.

The first position was taken by N Malaei from Iran who finished in three minutes 47.371 seconds.

The bronze medal for Indonesia was won by Wahyuni and Yuniarti who paired in the LW2X event.

The gold medal in the event went to a team from Kazakhstan and the silver medal to an Iranian team.

At the championship that ended on Sunday, Kazakhstan was declared the general champion, having collected five gold, four silver and two bronze medals, followed by Iran with four gold, four silver and two bronze medals and Indonesia with two gold, one silver and one bronze medals.

The Indonesian team consisted of six male and six female rowers.

Indonesia is relying on rowing for a haul of medals. Two of its athletes have qualified for the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.(*)
