Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The result of the referendum as per which the United Kingdom should leave the European Union, must be respected, the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Moazzam Malik, said at a press conference here on Saturday.

"The British people yesterday decided to plan a new future for their country, a future which is outside the political institution of the European Union. As said by Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday, the result is already evident and must be respected," he stated.

The ambassador termed the result of the referendum conducted on June 23, 2016 as one reflecting the aspiration of all the British people everywhere.

"Anyone, whether they chose the UK to remain a member of the EU or leave it, should put aside all differences for the sake of unity and togetherness, while we are processing the implications and finding solutions in the future," he added.

The ambassador called upon all parties not to dispute the referendum.

"Its important to remain calm and rational and use our minds without emotion," he stressed.

Reuters reported that the British people who wanted the UK to remain a member of the European Union lagged behind those who wanted the country to leave the EU by 21 million votes.

About 17.4 million people voted for the UK to leave the EU and 16.1 million people wanted the country to remain part of the EU.

A landslide victory for those who wanted Britain to leave the EU took place in Sunderland, Leeds, Luton, Swindon and Kirkless.(*)
