Probolinggo, E Java (ANTARA News) - The Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) said on Thursday that Mount Bromo has remained on alert level II and that an exclusion zone of one kilometer from the peak has been set up following reports of volcanic activity at the famous volcano in East Java.

"Based on the observation of the tremor energy and the deformation, in general the activity of Mount Bromo is still fluctuating," the head of Monitoring and Investigation of Western Areas Volcanoes at the PVMBG Hendra Gunawan said here on Thursday.

The 2,329 meter high volcano has been spewing volcanic ash for the last couple of weeks as a result of the eruption, Hendra said.

No activities are allowed within a one kilometer radius from the peak of the volcano.

"Officers at the Bromos observation post in Ngadisari Village, Sukapura sub-district of Probolinggo district reported that a low-pitched temblor was heard from Bromos peak," Hendra said.

During Thursdays observation, a plume of smoke rose 300 to 1,000 meters in the sky from the volcanos peak to the south and in the southwest direction.

Tourists, who are visiting Mount Bromo are urged not to come closer to the peak due to the volcanos one kilometer exclusion zone as a safety precaution.(*)
