Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla inaugurated an international seminar of the Muslim World League (WML), or "Rabithah Al Alam Al Islami," at the Buya Hamka Hall of Al Azhar Mosque here on Thursday.

The seminar, themed the role of mosques in preventing heresies, was highlighted by a dialog and discussion led by several key persons, including MWL Secretary General Prof. Abdullah A At Turki, Indonesias third President B.J. Habibie, deputy chairman of the Peoples Consultative Assembly Hidayat Nurwahid, and great imam of Istiqlal Mosque KH Nasaruddin Umar.

MWL is the worlds largest non-governmental organization established on May 18, 1962, and is headquartered in Mecca.

It is officially present in Indonesia based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The MoU acts as an umbrella for all MWL activities in Indonesia, and the MWL representative in Indonesia is led by Fahd M.S. Al Harbi.

MWLs activities in Indonesia include developing mosques and sanitary facilities as well as offering charity to the poor.

One of MWLs latest activities in Indonesia was holding an international seminar on "Moderating Islam, Terrorism and Sectarianism" in Lombok, on July 25-29, 2016, in cooperation with the provincial government of West Nusa Tenggara and the Indonesia Council of Ulemas and was officially opened by President Joko Widodo.(*)
