Palu (ANTARA News) - Around 100 athletes including from foreign countries are participating in the 3rd series of Paragliding Pre World Championship being held in Central Sulawesi Province from August 13 to 20, 2016.

Head of the Sigi District Irwan Lapata, while opening the international event at Wayu village of Marawola Barat sub-district on Saturday, expressed the hope that the foreign athletes will also be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the place and of Palu Bay, one of the tourist attractions in the area.

All participants of the 3rd series of Paragliding Pre World Championship only compete in the cross country game or flying far away by setting five points of the final landing.

"I am proud that such a major world paragliding event is taking place in our area," Irwan noted, adding that this is the first ever big event held in Central Sulawesi.

Meanwhile on August 16-18, 2015, the Indonesian national team took part at the 8th World Paragliding Accuracy Championship scheduled in Puncak, West Java.

Indonesia sent 10 athletes to the event consisting of five men and five women.

They include Thomas Widyananto, Alexander H, Arief Kurniawan, Nanang Sunarya and Dede Supratman for the mens events and Lis Andriana, Ike Ayu Wulandari, Rina Kusumaningrum, Milawati Sirin and Dian Rosnalia for the womens events.
