Jakarta (ANTARA News) - PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) public transport company, owned by the Jakarta city administration, is set to chalk up 15 million passengers a month.

"In August 2016, Transjakarta buses carried 11.68 million passengers. This year we hope to increase the number to 15 million," Chief Executive of the transport company Budi Kaliwono said.

In August, Transjakarta buses carried 374,000 passengers everyday on the average or an increase of 10 percent from June, Budi Kaliwono said here on Sunday.

"In June 2016, the number of passengers totaled 10.2 million or averaging 340,000 per day. We would not make comparison with performance in July as July was a special period with long Idul Fitri holidays," he said.

He said the company would continue to improve services for the convenience of the passengers that more city travelers mostly working people would choose Transjakarta buses rather than driving with private cars.

He said the company would increase the number of its buses by phases to keep pace with the growing demand.

In addition the special lanes of Transjakarta buses would be strictly closed to other means of transports, he said.

"We would cooperate with the Jakarta metropolitan police to ensure that the operation of Transjakarta buses would not be hampered," he said.

Transjakarta is designed to help cope with traffic jams in the city especially during rush hours .

Its buses are provided with special lanes closed to private cars and other means of public transport that they would not be hampered by traffic jams that grows worse everyday in the capital city. (*)
