Bandung, West Java (ANTARA News) - Host West Java left its close rivals far behind in the medal standings on the second day of the 19th National Sports Week (PON) in West Java on Sunday.

West Java which secured the second place in the 18th PON 2012 in Riau province has snatched 44 gold medals as of 09.30 pm on Sunday, leaving defending champion Jakarta in the second place with 24 gold medals.

In Sunday's events, West Java grabbed eight more gold medals out of 39 gold medals up for grabs on the day. Two of the eight gold medals were obtained from swimming, two from, wushu one respectively from dance, bodybuilding, judo, karate and cycling.

East Java trailed behind in third place with 16 gold medals, 28 silver medals and 21 bronze medals.

Although President Joko Widodo officially opened the 19th PON only on September 17, several events have started three days earlier. In total, the PON had a total of 50 events played.

In the first week of the PON which will last until September 29 three contingents of West Java, Jakarta and East Java have heredity been top three medalists.

South Sulawesi which occupied the fourth place in the medal standings obtained four gold medals, seven silver medals and two bronze medals, followed by Riau (4-5-12) and Central Java (4-3-19).
