Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Megawati Soekarnoputri, the general chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), has expressed the hope that the 2017 Jakarta election would be conducted peacefully.

"I hope the 2017 Jakarta election goes off safely and peacefully," Megawati Soekarnoputri, also President of the Republic of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004, said here on Wednesday.

The remarks came as the chairwoman accompanied Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat to register with the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) on Wednesday afternoon.

The duo was also accompanied by representatives of the Golkar Party, the Hanura Party and the NasDem Party.

"Thank God that the duo was able to go through the process, submitting all appropriate documents required for the registration process at the headquarters of the KPU," Megawati added.

Hundreds of supporters of Ahok and Djarot had also gathered at the Jakarta General Elections Commission in a show of support for the Ahok-Djarot pair in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial elections.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) had earlier declared its support for Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat on Tuesday afternoon to run for the 2017 Jakarta election.

The party also announced its candidates for 101 other provinces, districts and municipalities that will witness a contest in the 2017 simultaneous regional elections.

The Jakarta Elections Commission opened candidate registration for the election on Sept 21. It will continue till Sept 23.
