Bengkulu (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of domestic tourists flocked to privately owned garden of rare flowers in the village of Tebat Monok, in regency of Kepahiang, Bengkulu, to see worlds tallest flower Amorphophallus gigas blossming.

The flower of the 4 meters tall Amorphophallus gigas is in full blossom, Holidin, the owner of the garden said on Monday.

"From the first time we told some people including the mass media about the flower many visitors have come to this place," Holidin said.

Amorphophallus gigas is known as carrion flower for its unpleasant smell. It is one of four types of the family of carrion flower grown in the three hectare garden near the protected forest of Bukit Daun.

Amorphophallus gigas is the tallest of all four types of the family that also include Amorphophallus titanum, Amorphophallus variabilis dan Amorphophallus paeonifolius.

The petals began to open on Monday afternoo, and it is expected fully blossom on Tuesday, Holidin said.

The first time the flower of Amorphophallus gigas to blossom in the garden was 2013, he said.

The blossoming flower would last for three days befroe ti began to fade and wither, he said.

Romel, one of the visitors from the city of Bengkulu, said he was glad to have the rare opportunity to see the flower to blossom.

He said he appreciated the initiative of the Holifin family in preserving the rare flowers.

He said the family deserve appreciation and support from the government for the initiative.(*)
