Palembang (ANTARA News) - South Sumatra is all set to host an international triathlon championship in July 2017 since the province already has adequate sports facilities and the required infrastructure.

Ahmad Najib, the Assistant for Peoples Welfare at the South Sumatra Provincial Secretariat, said here on Wednesday that the triathlon championship combines swimming, cycling and marathon.

He added that the sports facilities in South Sumatra have been certified to be fit for an international event.

Earlier, representatives of the Asian Triathlon Organization had visited the Jakabaring sports center in Palembang and stated that the province is ready to provide various facilities for the event.

The provincial administration is now renovating several sports venues for the event, Ahmad informed.

The administration will hold the swimming contests at the same lake that was used for water skiing event during the SEA Games.

The cycling and marathon events will also be held around the lake, Ahmad noted.

Palembang, the capital city of South Sumatra, has the Sriwijaya Stadium, which is also known as the Jakabaring Stadium. This multi-purpose stadium is located within the Jakabaring Sports City complex.
