Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Fijis Minister for Defense and National Security Ratu Inoke Kubuabola met National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Chief Suhardi Alius to discuss counterterrorism and handling the root problem of terrorism.

"Fijis Minister for Defense and National Security Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and his entourage made a working visit to BNPT to learn about counterterrorism and to know the preventive measures being used against terrorism," Suhardi Alius said in a press release received here on Thursday.

Suhardi stated that the government of Fiji has lauded BNPTs efforts in handling terrorism in the country.

"Terrorism has become a global issue. Therefore, Fiji will cooperate with BNPT on counterterrorism training," Suhardi said.

During the meeting, Deputy III for International Cooperation Inspector General Petrus R. Golose pointed out that the law enforcement should not violate human rights.

"We should be mindful of maintaining human rights while tackling terrorism," Petrus said.

He further said BNPT had supported programs in relation to human rights. BNPT has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Commission on Human Rights.

"We always refer to the criminal justice system before arresting the terrorists," he remarked.
