Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former finance minister Marie Muhammad passed away at age 77, after being treated at National Brain Center Hospital since mid November, here, Sunday.

"Please forgive all his sins and mistakes so far, and pray for all his good deeds be accepted by Allah SWT, Aamiin," Zainal Irwan, son-in-law of Marie Muhammad said in a short text message.

His remains will be buried in Tanah Kusir public cemetery after prayers in Al Azhar Mosque, Kebayoran, South Jakarta.

Among VIPs paying their last respect were former vice president Boediono, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and former energy and mineral resource minister Sudirman Said.

Marie Muhammad was finance minister during the Development VI cabinet era in the 1993-1998 period under the Suharto administration. He was also taxation director general from 1988 to 1993.

Born in Surabaya, East Java, on April 3, 1939, Marie Muhammad was popularly known as "Mr Clean" because of his anti-corruption stance.

From 1999 to 2009, he was chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).

His last posts included chairman of the Indonesian Humanitarian Committee (KKI), head of the Indonesian Transparency Community (MTI), and president commissioner of PT Bank Syariah Mega Indonesia.
