Pekalongan (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) visited the Kajen market in Pekalongan District, Central Java, to gather first hand information on the physical condition of the traditional market on Monday.

Some community members and traders had, since morning, gathered at the market to welcome the president who arrived at 9 a.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time.

Speaking to community members and traders, the president stated that the government will renovate the Kajen market.

"I have ordered that this market be renovated and that the kiosks be managed well," the president said, adding that he had urged the Pekalongan district head to renovate the market as soon as possible.

President Jokowi remarked that the renovation of Kajen market was considered important to develop the local economy, as it is the main market in Pekalongan.

The head of state undertook a tour of the market for about 30 minutes and communicated with the merchants to gauge their grievances and aspirations.

En route from the hotel on Gajah Mada Street to the market, scores of people lined up the street to greet the president.

The students of elementary, secondary, and senior high schools also thronged the street and waved small red-and-white flags to welcome the president.
