Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - The Surabaya city government is preparing five hectares of land in Romokalisari area to build a modern fish market starting April 2017.

The construction of the fish market is scheduled for completion at the end of this year, head of the Surabaya food security and agriculture office Joestamadji said here on Sunday.

"The construction of the modern fish market is aimed at strengthening the competitive edge of fishery products," he said.

The modern fish market will be located near the old fish landing facility, he said.

He said a one-kilometer road heading to the modern fish market has been constructed.

The fish market has strategic location because it is close to a toll road and large fish producing areas such as Gresik and Lamongan, he said.

The presence of the fish market will help the city meet fish demand projected at 100 thousand tons per year.(*)
