Jokowi invited to UN meeting on violence against children

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has been invited to participate in an annual meeting of the United Nations in New York this July to discuss violence against children.

The invitation was presented by Marta Santos Pais, a Special Representative on Violence against Children of the UN Secretary General (SRSG), who met the president on Monday.

The meeting with Jokowi was significant, because Indonesia has been committed to preventing violence against children, Pais stated.

She lauded Indonesias efforts to tackle crimes against children and believed that that it could become a role model in the region.

Womens Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise said that the president was invited to the UN meeting to share Indonesias experiences in dealing with problems concerning children.

Pais and a delegation of United Nations Childrens Fund (Unicef) met the Head of State at Merdeka Palace.

The Head of State was flanked by Minister/State Secretary Pratikno, Education Minister Muhajir Effendi, and Minister of Womens Empowerment and Child Protection Yohana Yembise.

Pais was accompanied by Gunilla Olsson (UNICEF Representative in Indonesia), Ali Aulia Ramly (UNICEF Child Protection Specialist and Interpreter), Andrew Claypole (Special Advisor to UN Special Representative to the Secretary General on Violence against Children), Lauren Rumble (UNICEF Deputy Representative), Amanda Bissex (UNICEF Chief of Child Protection Cluster), and Ryan Fajar Febriyanto (UNICEF Child Protection Officer on Violence Against Children).

Pais, who was from Portugal, was appointed as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children (SRSG) on May 1, 2009, and took up her position on Sept 1, 2009.

As a high-level global independent advocate, Pais promotes the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children in the justice setting, at home, in institutional care, at schools, at workplaces, and in the community.
