Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite expected that Indonesia and Lithuania could develop bilateral cooperation in the trade and services sectors, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Setya Novanto stated.

"The president of Lithuania lauded the Indonesian government for the bilateral cooperation that has been built," the DPR speaker noted after a meeting with Lithuanian President Grybauskatie at the DPR complex here on Wednesday.

President of the Republic of Lithuania Grybauskaite pointed out that his country had made several achievements after becoming an independent state and forging bilateral cooperation with Indonesia, Novanto remarked.

"Government-to-government and parliament-to-parliament cooperation has been established properly," the Lithuanian president remarked.

The president also elaborated on the progress made by the Republic of Lithuania in the areas of biomass processing, waste management, power generation, and transportation.

"The president expressed hope that Indonesia would be able to develop bilateral cooperation with the Republic of Lithuania," he emphasized.

In addition, the president is optimistic that the Indonesian Parliament would be able to support the development of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier, President Grybauskatie and Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had discussed the development of cooperation between the two countries.

President Grybauskaite is the first Lithuanian president to visit Indonesia since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 24 years ago, President Jokowi stated.

During the joint conference following a meeting with President Grybauskaite at the Merdeka Palace, Wednesday, President Jokowi expressed hope that this historic momentum would be beneficial to enhance bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Lithuania.

The bilateral meeting has resulted in the inking of two cooperation agreements in the areas of energy and information technology for the transportation sector.

"I am pleased to witness the signing of two cooperation agreements in the fields of renewable energy and energy conservation as well as transportation," Jokowi noted.

Cooperation in the energy sector covers the development of biomass, energy from waste, and gas, while cooperation in the area of information technology is expected to be useful for the land transportation and aviation sectors.

"We also agreed to increase cooperation in trade and investment, as we are together encouraging the completion of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiation," the Indonesian president added.(*)
