Depok, W.Java (ANTARA News) - The University of Indonesia (UI) has once again achieved the first rank as the best university in Indonesia, according to Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2017.

UI Rector Professor Muhammad Anis, in a written statement received by ANTARA here on Monday, stated that the UI is intensifying teaching, learning, and research supported by Information Communication Technology (ICT).

"One of them is website development for downloading journals and improving national and international scientific publications from UI civitas academia to provide access to knowledge transfer, education, and improving teaching quality," he noted.

According to Webometrics 2017 version, in addition to UI, some Indonesian universities which are included in the top five in the country are Gadjah Mada University (ranked second in Indonesia and 1,004 in the world), Bandung Institute of Technology (ranked third at national and 1,209 in the world), Bogor Institute of Agriculture (fourth at national and 1.342 at global level), and Brawijaya University (ranked fifth at national and 1,870 at global level).

Webometrics also released that the UI ranked is at the 14th in Southeast Asia and ranked 955th in the world. UI is considered the best in terms of open access to scientific publications that can be reached by the world community through the Internet network.

Webometrics assessment is based on the number of web pages recorded on search engines (Google) and visibility, which is the number of unique external links (number of backlinks) received by the web domain of colleges (inlinks) recorded by search engines (Google).

Webometrics is a website-based university ranking system worldwide. Webometrics believes that web presence and visibility can be used as a global performance indicator of a university.

The indicator considers universitys teaching commitments, research results, international prestige, and community relations, including with industrial and economic sectors and between universities.

The ranking is conducted by the Spanish Cybermetric lab, which assesses more than 19 thousand higher educational institutions in the world.

Webometrics ranking system aims to promote publications webs and support open access and electronic access for scientific publications and other academic materials.(*)
