Purwokerto, C Java (ANTARA News) - Thousands of people in Central Java`s Cilacap district reportedly fled their homes after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the southern coastal areas of Java on late Friday.

Many of the residents who live in the southern coastal areas of the district had evacuated to higher ground, day-to-day chief of the Cilacap district natural disaster mitigation board (BPBD) Tri Komara Sidhy said early Saturday.

"They have evacuated to higher ground on their own. Based on information from the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency), the earthquake had the potential to cause a tsunami in West Java, while Cilacap is on alert," he said.

The BPBD was still monitoring the condition in the field after the coastal areas had low tide when the the earthquake occurred, he said.
