Tens of thousands of people have protested across Iran since Thursday.

The protests began in Iran`s second city of Mashhad in the northeast on Thursday and spread to Tehran and the other urban centers. Iranians vented their ire over a sharp rise in the prices of basic necessities, such as eggs, and a government`s proposal to hike fuel prices in next year`s budget.

Some protesters also expressed their rage over the high rate of unemployment and savings that were lost after investments in unlicensed credit and financial institutions turned sour.

The demonstrations, initially focused on economic hardships and alleged corruption, turned into political rallies.

The police have arrested more than 450 protesters in the capital city of Tehran over the past three days.

There were unconfirmed reports of several casualties among demonstrators.
