Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government has planned to revitalize and renovate 1,592 traditional markets across the country in 2018, to materialize one of the government`s nine priorities (Nawacita) programs.

The Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said here on Thursday, the revitalization program will need Rp3.13 trillion (US$232 million) of fund.

Of the total budget, Rp1.53 trillion (US$113.4 million) will come from the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) and Rp1.6 trillion (US$118.5 million) will be the Assistance Tasks (TP) fund.

"Revitalization of traditional markets will not only improve its building. In 2018, we will revitalize 1,592 markets," he said.

According to data of the Trade Ministry, traditional market revitalization program has run since 2015. The program has covered 783 traditional markets in 2016 and 909 traditional markets in 2017.

By 2019, the government has targeted to revitalize 5,000 traditional markets as the main booster of grass root economy, and as of 2017, it has revitalized 2,715 markets so far.

The government will focus its program for type C and D markets in 2018, which majority of them are situated in suburban areas.

A type C traditional market has less than 500 square meter of area with at least 50 traders and operated twice a week. While a type D market has some 500 square meter of land with at least 500 traders and operated weekly.

"It would not be easy to move a traditional market, and usually create another problem. Revitalization would be easier," Enggartiasto said.
