Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Chairman of the Central Board of the Golkar Party Airlangga Hartarto has officially proposed the name of Bambang Soesatyo as speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) to replace Setya Novanto.

"Golkar Party`s Central Board has decided to nominate Bambang Soesatyo as speaker of the House of Representatives," Hartarto stated during a press conference at the Parliament`s Golkar Party Faction, Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Monday.

Hartarto explained that his party`s decision was made after communicating with senior Golkar Party officials about a suitable party cadre to occupy the position.

He noted that after conducting strategic internal and political communication, it was decided to nominate Soesatyo to be the speaker of DPR, as he had the relevant experience.

"Bambang Soesatyo has a longstanding experience in the House of Representatives, so he understands the nature of the system and the institution of the DPR and has conceptual ideas. He is also a former journalist, so he can communicate well," he pointed out.

Hartarto remarked that the Golkar Party understood that the DPR speaker had difficult tasks, especially in the years ahead, as the political constellation might increase.

He pointed out that the DPR can contribute to developing a conducive situation in the political, legal, and economic sectors.

"The DPR is getting greater attention, as it is in an unfavorable position now, so it needs to improve its performance and positive image in the community," he stated.

He emphasized that before inaugurating Bambang as the DPR speaker, the Central Board of Golkar Party had requested the DPR`s Golkar Party Faction to withdraw Soesatyo`s membership in the Special Committee on the Inquiry Right and Authority of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

According to Hartarto, the Central Board of the Golkar Party had requested that the work of the KPK Special Committee be immediately completed.

"In principle, we are not tolerant of steps that weaken the KPK, as it is the mandate of the Golkar Party Extraordinary Congress," he added.
