Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said cooperation among the government, mass media and civil society is needed to eradicate drug abuse and trafficking.

"Cooperation among all parties is needed. Of course, the media is badly needed in this respect and all officials must also avoid it (the abuse of narcotics). The only way is to avoid and prevent it and then arrest (the traffickers and users of the drugs)," he said at a function, marking the destruction of drugs, at the National Monument (Monas) Square here on Friday.

At the event, the Vice-President symbolically destroyed a plastic bag of crystal meth in the disposal machine.

"I have been informed that one bag of crystal meth is valued at about Rp2 billion. So the 2.6 tonnes (of crystal meth) we destroyed here are valued at trillions of rupiahs. The question is why many people were arrested and escaped. The number of those escaping is higher than the number of those arrested by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and police," he said.

The Vice-President praised BNN, police, military and immigration personnel for arresting drug dealers, traffickers and users. "We all know the danger of drugs, particularly to younger generations who consume the drugs," he said.

The 2.6 tonnes of crystal meth destroyed on Friday were part of 4.731 tonnes seized in various raids conducted by BNN.
