Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Riau Provincial Police have managed to thwart an attempt to conduct a terror attack by shooting dead four terror suspects, according to the Indonesian Police (Polri).

"I remind (you) that this is a success of the Riau Police in thwarting terror acts," Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, Polri spokesman, noted here, Wednesday.

The attack occurred on Wednesday morning at the Riau Police Headquarters in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau Province, when a minivan, with five terror suspects aboard, attempted to enter the police headquarters` gate.

Four men got out of the minivan and tried to attack police officers by using samurais. The police shot dead the four.

The minivan`s driver, in an attempt to flee, hit a police officer until he died, and injured a television journalist.

The driver was later arrested by the Riau police.

Earlier, the Riau Provincial Police confirmed that they had shot dead four terrorists attempting to attack the Riau Police Headquarters in Pekanbaru on Wednesday.

Adjunct Senior Commissioner Sunarto, spokesman of the Riau Provincial Police, informed the press here on Wednesday that the four were shot dead after getting out of a minivan earlier used to attack police officers.

The four were armed with samurais and tried to attack the officers.

"The Riau Police managed to foil a terror attack at around 9 a.m. local time this morning. We remain vigilant and have taken a stern measure by neutralizing four perpetrators at the site," he revealed.

The terror attack in Riau occurred three days after a similar attack on the Surabaya police headquarters in East Java.

The suicide bombers, who had attacked the Police Headquarters in Surabaya on Monday morning, were members of one family.

The attackers had used two motorcycles with explosive bombs.
