"Upholding international law is important to protect the weak and to prevent 'the might takes all' approach".
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi conveyed to the UN member states in New York, Thursday, the importance of upholding international law to maintain international peace and security.

The message was delivered by Minister Marsudi before the UN Security Council Open Debate on Upholding International Law in UN Headquarter, New York, according to a press release from the Indonesian Permanent Mission to the UN on Friday.

"Upholding international law is important to protect the weak and to prevent 'the might takes all' approach," Marsudi said in a statement.

To achieve its main mandate, Marsudi emphasized, the UNSC must uphold international law and ensure implementation of its resolution.

"One example is the resolution on Palestine, of which many are yet fully implemented," Marsudi said.

Furthermore, Marsudi said that the people of the world are the constituent of the UNSC. The beneficiaries of the products of UNSC must be all the people worldwide.

To realize peace, one could start from its neighbors, Marsudi said adding that ASEAN will be the vanguard in realizing peace not only in Southeast Asia but also in Indo-Pacific region.

The open debate was chaired under the presidency of Poland in the UNSC.

President of Poland chaired the open debate which was attended by 12 officials at ministerial level and representatives of 74 UN member states.

In the sidelines of the UNSC open debate, Minister Marsudi attended the UN Forum in the Question of Palestine to show the strong support of Indonesia to the Palestinian cause.

Indonesia's Permanent Representative to UN Triansyah Djani said that Indonesia`s participation to the UNSC open debate reflected the country`s commitment in contributing to world peace.

Indonesia's active participation in the open debate was expected to positively contribute to the country's bid for a non-permanent seat of UNSC for 2019-2020 period.
