Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta composite index (IHSG) closed stronger on Monday to follow the appreciation of the national currency rupiah.

The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) increased 1.55 percent to 6,068.32 points and the index of 45 most liquid stocks (LQ45) rose 2.01 percent to 977.66 points.

Analyst of Binaartha Sekuritas Reza Priyambada said the IHSG climbed higher in line with the rupiah strengthening against the U.S. dollar.

"The appreciation of rupiah and strengthening of bond market helped rupiah to remain in a positive areas," Reza said.

Foreign investors buying back shares helped prop up IHSG. Based on data at BEI, foreign investors recorded a net buy of Rp512.3 billion.

There were 424,559 transactions with 9.498 billion shares worth Rp8.406 trillion changing hands in Monday`s trade. Gainers outnumbered decliners by 227 to 158 shares with 127 shares flat.

Regional markets including Nikkei, Hang Seng and Straits Times recorded an increase in index.
