Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Customs and Excise Department have foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs into Indonesia through a postal package from Belgium and Ethiopia.

"Ecstasy pills were sent from Belgium to several addresses in Bogor, Bekasi, Bandung, and West Jakarta. The confiscated drugs comprised 14,487 ecstasy pills and 203 grams of crystal methamphetamine," BNN Deputy for Elimination Insp. Gen. Arman Depari noted in a short message to ANTARA on Monday.

Dispatch of the drugs is believed to be controlled by an inmate named Tommy from the Salemba Penitentiary in Central Jakarta, he noted.

"Delivery control techniques were applied to seize 68 kilograms of the drugs from Ethiopia sent through postal parcels to addresses in Jakarta and Dumai, Riau," Depari noted.

The shipment was arranged by an Indonesian woman residing in Malaysia, he revealed.

Earlier, police in the Indonesian province of Riau had foiled an attempt to smuggle 41 kilograms of crystal meth and 44 thousand ecstasy pills, mostly to Jakarta.

The drugs were seized at two different locations, Chief of the Riau Provincial Police Inspector General Nandang stated on Thursday.

Nandang believes that the drugs were smuggled from the same country Malaysia.

"Drug trafficking has reached an alarming level," he added.

During the first raid on May 9, conducted 293 kilometers off the East Trans Highway in front of the Kemuning Sub-district police station, the police seized 29 kilograms of crystal meth from a resident, identified by his initials as SS. The 44-year-old SS has been named a suspect in the case.

In addition, the police seized 20 thousand green ecstasy pills bearing the Omega brand and a minivan.

The crystal meth was believed to be smuggled into Jakarta by land.

During the second raid, the police had seized 12 kilograms of crystal meth and 24 thousand red ecstasy pills bearing the logo S from two suspects, identified by their initials as HC and MM. The two suspects were arrested on May 14.
