Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended a ceremony to commemorate the birth of Pancasila on June 1 at the Nusantara Building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Pejambon street.

Wearing Solo traditional costume, the president arrived at the Nusantara Building at 8 am to commemorate the event with numerous cabinet members and the heads of the state high institutions.

President Jokowi has set June 1 as the date of the birthday of Pancasila, the state ideology.

It was stipulated by Presidential Decree Number 24 of 2016 on the Birthday of Pancasila.

Implementation of Pancasila values requires the formation of ideology through a planned program, and be integrated to be a guide for all components of the Indonesian nation.

Therefore, the President through Presidential Regulation No. 7 of 2018 has decided the Presidential Work Unit of Ideology of Pancasila become the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency.

The president said the ideology was formulated over a series of months by the country`s first president, Soekarno.

Pancasila was first formally announced as the country`s guiding ideology on Aug. 18, 1945.

The values enshrined in Pancasila were agreed to by various stakeholders, including the country`s founding fathers, ulemas, religious figures and freedom fighters across the archipelago at the time of Indonesia`s war of independence against the Netherlands.

Hence, it should be remembered that diversity is inherent to Indonesian society. It is God`s destiny for them, represented by the national motto, `Bhinneka Tunggal Ika` [Unity in Diversity]."

The values enshrined in Pancasila have been threatened recently by religious organizations promoting an Islamist political restructuring of society on social media and in mass actions.

Therefore, the president had encouraged ulemas, clerics, priests, pastors, Hindu and Buddhist monks, educators, art workers, media professionals, the military and police, and all other elements of society to come together to safeguard Pancasila.

The president had also said the government would act firmly against any organization or movement that promotes ideologies contrary to Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution and the country`s motto, Unity in Diversity.
