Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN in Geneva Ambassador Hasan Kleib has commenced the task of presiding over a series of meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, on the cessation of the nuclear race and disarmament.

This was noted in a press statement from the Indonesian Permanent Representative Office in Geneva, received here on Tuesday.

The series of meetings to be held until mid-August of 2018 is being conducted within the framework of the Conference on Disarmament.

"This mandate is a form of trust as well as the international community`s recognition of Indonesia`s commitment to safeguarding global peace and contributing to a world free of nuclear weapons," Kleib stated.

He explained that one of the priorities that Indonesia will lay emphasis on during the series of meetings is to accelerate efforts to realize a world without nuclear weapons.

The Indonesian government will prioritize the role of liaison in aligning differences in positions and approaches between nuclear and non-nuclear weapon states.

"It is not an easy effort, as some countries still rely on nuclear weapons as part of their national military doctrine, some of which are even continuing to modernize their nuclear weapons," he explained.

The situation is also increasingly complex, with the development of security dynamics in various regions of the world, especially in the Korean Peninsula and the Middle East, he noted.

Nevertheless, the Indonesian government will continue to build trust among nations by utilizing the international dialog room at various international forums, particularly at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

In the end, these efforts are expected to help countries to agree on an international agreement on abolition of nuclear weapons.

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN performs the task of presiding over the conference after being selected through a census by all Conference on Disarmament member countries at the Plenary Meeting on March 27, 2018.

Conference on Disarmament in Geneva is the only multilateral forum mandated to negotiate international agreements on disarmament.

This conference is followed by 65 countries, including all those possessing nuclear weapons and nations with the most significant military power in the world.

The Conference on Disarmament has resulted in numerous international agreements on regulation and disarmament, including the Biological Weapons Convention, Chemical Weapons Convention, and the Trial Ban Treaty Nuclear Weapons.
