Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian Police (Polri) have made every effort to anticipate land and forest fires when the country hosts the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang from Aug 18 to Sept 2.

"We have taken steps to secure the Asian Games. Today, we sent a weather modification plane and launched a land operation to spray water on peatlands," TNI Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Station on Monday.

He stated that his side will launch two types of operation to deal with the possibility of land and forest fires in South Sumatra during the Asian Games.

The weather modification technology will take advantage of the cyclone over the Philippine territory whose cyclone tail will be used to produce rains in South Sumatra.

"But the artificial rains must be supported by land operation to monitor the possibility of hotspots by using several devices installed in several areas to monitor the humidity of peatland," he noted.

The devices will send signals if the peatland dries. Hence, TNI and Polri, along with other components, will spray water on it to prevent fire, he remarked.

TNI Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Police Chief General Tito Karnavian held a meeting at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police`s Meeting Hall earlier in the day to discuss preparations to secure the Asian Games.
