Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s Witness and Victims Protection Agency (LPSK) has handed out compensation totaling Rp1.6 billion to victims of three terror attacks in Jakarta and North Sumatra.

The compensation was distributed to 17 victims and their next of kin by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto in the company of LPSK Chief Abdul Haris Semendawai here on Thursday.

They were the victims of terror attacks in Thamrin Street, Central Jakarta; Kampung Melayu area in East Jakarta; and the attack at the North Sumatra police headquarters.

"In term of its value, this might not be worth it. However, it at least demonstrated the government`s attention to the victims," the minister noted.

Earlier, a panel of judges that led the trial of the three cases had accepted the plea for compensation for the victims.

"Thank God, it was accepted by the panel of judges, and the state paid the compensation through the LPSK," Semendawai added.

Of the 17 victims that received the compensation, 13 were the victims of the Thamrin bombing incident and received a total Rp814 million, while Rp202 million in total was given to three victims of the Kampung Melayu bombing incident.

One victim of the attack on the North Sumatra police headquarters received Rp611 million on grounds that she was a mother of nine children.

"The amount might not be sufficient to recover from the physical injuries or trauma, or could return back the lives. However, it could at least cover some of the losses for the next of kin," he emphasized.

The compensation will send across a message that the state stands up for the victims, he stated.

On the occasion, Wiranto has inaugurated the LPSK building and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between LPSK and the Finance and Development Auditor on good governance.
