London (ANTARA News) - A Jakarta team of 8 school students won a silver trophy as a runner up in the third Moscow Metropolis International Olympics in sciences taking place in the Russian capital from Sept 2 to 7 this year.

The competition was divided into three categories - teams, individuals and blitz contests with participants from various cities in the world, First Secretary of the Indonesian embassy in the Moscow Enjay Diana said on Sunday.

Sharing the second place in the competition included Belgrade, Sofia, Minsk, Istanbul, Budapest, Yerevan and Zagreb.

First place was shared by Moscow, Shanghai, Saint Petersburg and Hong Kong; and third place shared by Leipzig, Baku, Dushanbe, Innsbruck, Milan, Astana, Almaty, Bratislava, Bishkek and Banja-Luka.

Enjay Diana said the Olympics were participated in by 25 big cities from 25 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

Jakarta was the only participant from Southeast Asia.

The fields contested were mathematics, physics, chemical and computer sciences for teams and individuals . There is also blitz contest. Each city was represented by two contestants in each contest.

In individuals category, Jakarta grabbed seven medals including three silvers and four bronzes. Two of the silver medals were won in chemical and one in physics contests. Bronze medals were won two each in mathematics and physicis contests. Gold medals were won by participants from Moscow in all sciences.

In blitz contest , the Jakarta was the sixth among 33 teams taking part after Moscow, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Belgrade and Sofia.

Shafira Aurelia, a participant from Jakarta said the questions were quite difficult.

Shafira , a senior high school student from SMAN 8 of Jakarta, who won a bronze from physics contest, said in the beginning she was pessimistic about winning a medal.

"But here we have new experience, meeting with participants from various countries and we knew the Moscow culture," the only girl participant from Jakarta, said.

Other members of the Jakarta team were Hendrikus Hansen Witarsa from SMA 3 Penabur (in mathematics), Bennett Clement/SMAK 1 Penabur (in mathematics), Daffa Fathani Adila/SMAN 8 (in physics), Muhammad Dzul Fakhri/SMAN 68 (in chemical) , Albert Sutiono/SMAK 1 Penabur (in chemical), Moses Mayer/SMA Jakarta Intercultural School (in computer, and Reinatt Hansel Wijaya/SMA Kanisius (in computer).

Indonesian Ambassador to Russia and Belarus, M. Wahid Supriyadi said he highly appreciated the achievements of the Jakarta students.

Their success contributes to the good name of not only Jakarta but Indonesia , the ambassador said.

"Russia is a country leading in sciences and technology including in mathematics in the world. There is an opportunity for the participants to study in Russia," he said.

The Metropolis Olympics is held every year by the Moscow city administration inviting participants from metropolitan cities. Jakarta already took part three time in the Olympics.

Jakarta is a sister city of Moscow .
