Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla and the European Union (EU) Commissioner for Environment, Fisheries, and Maritime Affairs Karmenu Vella discussed the circular economy trend during their meeting here on Friday.

"Our goal here is related to the economy. We bring some representatives of EU`s private sectors to discuss the practice of circular economy," Vella remarked after the 40-minute meeting at the Vice Presidential office.

According to Vella, EU has a commitment to move forward from the linear economy to circular economy.

Linear economy means that raw materials are used to make a product, and after its use, any waste is thrown away, while circular economy means to reuse and recycle the product.

"Circular economy means all materials in production must be recycled. In Indonesia, we promote circular economy and the chances for innovation, growth, and job opportunities from this circular economy," he elaborated.

During the visit, Vella brought representatives of some private sectors in the circular economy to meet with Indonesian businessmen.

"I think the circular economy in Indonesia will help to enhance cooperation between the EU and Indonesia," he stated.

Vella is also scheduled to hold meetings with some high-ranking officials, including Public Works and Public Housing Minister M. Basoeki Hadimoeljono and ASEAN Secretary General Dato Lim Jock Hoi.

He will also attend the Our Ocean Conference (OOC) in Bali on Oct 29, according to an official website of the EU.
