Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the meaning of the Heroes Day commemoration today is to advance the nation through education, science, and the unity of the Indonesian people.

"The heroism of the past was to liberate this nation from colonialism, but today, heroism is to advance this nation; increase intelligence; and boost education, prosperity, and justice," Kalla noted, while attending an occasion of the Indonesian Campus Mosque Association (AMKI) here on Saturday.

Efforts to achieve the nation`s progress starts from the enthusiasm of the youth, especially students, as did the fighters in 1945, he noted.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, of course, in universities and colleges, the purpose is to improve the dignity of the nation through education and science," he remarked in front of dozens of campus mosque administrators from state universities in Indonesia.

The spirit of the heroes in the Nov 10, 1945, battle was the same spirit as Muslims use to worship.

The phrase "Allahu Akbar" was used during the Battle of Surabaya, one of the historical events, to fight the invaders, the vice president stated.

"One of the symbols of November 10 was to move the community with `Allahu Akbar,` together with our takbir, and to always pray with Allahu Akbar in the beginning, so that the enthusiasm is the same as the spirit of people carrying out their prayer obligations," he revealed.

In addition to young people and students, the events of the Battle of Surabaya also involved the santri who were moved by several religious figures, such as KH. Hasyim Asy`ari and KH. Wahab Hasbullah

Therefore, as a mosque youth, the vice president reminded the AMKI member students to be able to maintain the existence of a mosque in the campus, which not only functions as a place of worship.

The mosque should function as a driving force for student activists to be able to improve the function of the mosque properly and develop good character.
