Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, is establishing cooperation with Denmark to improve scientific and mathematical capabilities of teachers and students.

The cooperation was explored at a meeting between the Danish Ambassador to Indonesia, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, and Minister of Education and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy.

A written statement received by Antara here on Wednesday mentioned that the opportunities for cooperation included management of public and private schools; development of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills; and improvement of Indonesian students` high order thinking (HOT) skills.

The Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) in 2015 ranked Denmark at 15th and Indonesia at 62nd position in the world.

PISA is a triennial international survey, which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students.

The opportunities for collaboration also include increasing the competence of Indonesian teachers to have 21st century expertise, and improving vocational education with the priority in the maritime and tourism fields.

Other areas of cooperation are training for teachers, as well as teacher and student exchanges in order to enhance their skills in creative learning, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills. These skills are expected to be trained at early childhood education programs, as well as elementary and secondary schools, and vocational educational programs.

Currently, there are 51 million students and three million teachers in Indonesia. Therefore, the government should improve the quality and skills of teachers and students.
