Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - The Surabaya city police in East Java has arrested an American national on charges of possessing hashish and crystal meth.

The 28-year old American, identified by his initials as ADE, worked as an English teacher at an English course institution in Surabaya, chief of drug detective unit of the Surabaya city police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner, Indra Mardiana, said on Tuesday.

"He has been staying in Surabaya for five years. He has been teaching English at a course institution for the past three years," he noted.

Mardiana added that the police also arrested a resident of Banyuwangi district in East Java on the same charges.

The 42-year old man, identified by his initials as EPE, is believed to have frequently consumed crystal meth together with ADE at Metropolis Apartment in Surabaya where he stays, he remarked.

"EPE was employed to supply clean water to Metropolis Apartment where ADE became acquainted with EFE. They are believed to have frequently abused crystal meth and hashish together," he pointed out.

He stated that ADE got the hashish from his friend.

The police are still investigating where they got the contraband, he added.

If found guilty, they could be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail under the narcotic law number 35 of 2009.
