Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - The Police have interrogated five construction workers to look into the cause of land subsidence on Gubeng highway in the East Java provincial capital of Surabaya on Tuesday night.

"Five people have been interrogated. A total of 29 people had been employed in the project, and six of them worked last night," Chief of the East Java Provincial Police Inspector General Luki Hermawan noted at the site of land subsidence on Wednesday.

To establish the exact cause of land subsidence on the highway, the police will coordinate with geologists of the Sepuluh November Institute of Technology in Surabaya and the Highway Construction and Maintenance Office, he remarked.

"We need to conduct in-depth investigation because (the land subsidence) is related to how the project is conducted," he noted.

He alleged that land subsidence on the Gubeng highway is related to the construction of a 490-square-meter, 11-meter-deep basement at Siloam Hospital that has reached 11 percent completion.

No suspects have been named in the case, he stated.

"No suspects have been named. The chief of the Surabaya City Police will lead a meeting with the contractor building the basement," he added.
