Ambon, Maluku, (ANTARA News)- An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale jolted the district of West Southeast Maluku (MTB), Maluku Province, on Wednesday at 8:40 a.m. local time.

The quake`s epicenter was located at 6.93 degree southern latitude and 128.97 degree eastern longitude, some 273 km northwest of MTB, and at a depth of 10 km, according to information on the website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agebct (BMKG).

The tremor did not have the potential to trigger a subsequent tsunami, Sunardi, head of the BMKG Ambon office, said.

Maluku Province was hit by a total of 1,587 tremors, including 61 earthquakes felt moderately by Maluku residents, during 2018.

Sunardi explained that Maluku is located in an area where three major faults, namely the Pacific, Indo Australia and Eurasia, met.

Meanwhile, a mild tremor measuring 3.5 on the Richter Scale jolted Jayapura District, Papua Province, on Wednesday at 3:23 a.m. local time.

The tremor`s epicenter was located at 2.38 degree southern latitude and 140.56 degree eastern longitude, 22 km northeast of Jayapura District, and at a depth of some 10 km, Petrus Demon Sili, head of the BMK Jayapura office, said.

"Based on reports from the public, the earthquake was felt at a II-III MMI (modified mercalli intensity) in Jayapura city," he remarked.

The quake did not have potential to cause a tsunami, he added.
