Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Incumbent presidential candidate Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the first 2019 presidential debate argued that law enforcement carried out in accordance with the right procedure should not be contested with the issue of human rights.

"A law enforcement action taken in accordance with the right procedure is not a human rights violation, for instance, the detention of a suspect," Jokowi said here on Thursday, Jan 17.

Jokowi explained that a detention of a crime suspect will indeed deprive someone of his or her independence, but it is a measure that needs to be taken since the act of law enforcement aims to protect the whole society.

He also gave an example related to the arrest of a suspect in a corruption case. He stressed that the arrests had to be made to prevent the suspects from escaping or hiding evidence.

"If there is an act of law enforcement that violates the right procedure, then we can proceed it to available legal mechanisms, such as pretrial hearing," Jokowi explained.

The General Election Commission held the first debate on the presidential and vice-presidential candidate pair for the 2019 Election with the theme of law, human rights, corruption and terrorism.
