Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Foreign Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi will campaign for Indonesia`s candidacy for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2020-2022 term during the 40th session of the UN body.

The minister is set to attend the 40th session of the UNHRC in Geneva, Switzerland, on Feb 25-28, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Arrmanatha Nasir noted here on Thursday.

"(She) will benefit from the UNHRC session to campaign for Indonesia`s candidacy for the UNHRC membership for the 2020-2022 term," he remarked.

The UNHRC will elect its members in November 2019. In the campaign, Indonesia will raise the theme "Indonesia True Partner for Democracy, Development and Social Justice."

Human Rights Director of the Foreign Ministry Achsanul Habib affirmed that the foreign minister will utilize the UNHRC session to campaign for Indonesia`s candidacy for membership of the UNHRC.

In addition, she will hold some 15 bilateral talks with other countries to support Indonesia`s candidacy for the UNHRC membership.

"We last held the campaign when the foreign minister had issued a statement at an annual press conference. We will also hold a series of activities to get support, either through bilateral or multilateral meetings," he stated.

Indonesia will nominate itself for the UNHRC membership for the 2020-2022 term for the Asia-Pacific region along with China, Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Marshall Island.

UNHRC is a UN body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world.
