Jakarta (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter Scale hit West Sumatra on Wednesday at 1:17 a.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB), according to information on the official website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The quake's epicenter was located at 10 km northeast of Padang Pariaman, and at a depth of 10 km underground.

The tremor was felt by residents of Padang Panjang and Pariaman at IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), and Agam and Tanah Datar Districts at II-III MMI.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, sits on the Ring of Fire, also known as Circum-Pacific Belt or Pacific Ring of Fire, where most earthquakes occur. This ring is said to be dotted with 75% of Earth’s all active volcanoes.
