Kupang (ANTARA) - An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude hit Belu district, East Nusa Tenggara province on Sunday, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Board (BMKG).

The tremor which struck at 09.18 a.m. was felt by people living in Kefamenanu, capital of Timor Tengah Utara district, at II-III on the Merchalli Modified Intensity (MMI) , Head of the BMKG Office in Kupang, Robert Owen Wahyu, said on Sunday.

The epicenter of the quake was on the land 15 kilometers west of Ambua, Belu district bordering Timor Leste at a depth of 54 kilometers.

Judging by its epicenter and hypocenter depth, Wahyu said the quake was a shallow quake caused by the subduction of . Indo-Australia plate.

The quake was also felt by people living in Kefamenanu at II-III on MMI.

There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

Wahyu called on the public to remain calm and not to be easily incited by rumors following the quake.
