"The person dead was identified as Lailla (20), a resident of Kebonbatur 04/06, Mranggen, Demak (district), Central Java. She died due to serious wounds on her head," Chief of the Traffic Unit of the Gunung Kidul Police Resort Adjunct Commissioner Mega Tetuko said in Gunung Kidul on Wednesday.
He said a total of 17 people sustained light injuries and 14 others were still traumatized.
It is believed that Agus Riyanto, the driver of the bus, which carried 35 passengers, had little knowledge of the roads in the area.
The bus, Ary Jaya with police number AB 7561 AK, later retreated and overturned.
Even until Wednesday evening, rescue workers of the Gunung Kidul District Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) were still clearing the ill-fated bus from the scene of the accident.
The bus met with the accident at around 03.00 p.m. on Wednesday while on its way from Pandanaran Bayat, Klaten district, Central Java, to Sadranan coast in Gunung Kidul.
