Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Police Strategic Study Institute (Lemkapi) said that any threat that targeted the president should not be underestimated, and the police should take stern measures against anyone issuing a threat.

"I laud the quick response of the Jakarta Police in arresting the man who threaten to behead President Jokowi," Lemkapi Executive Director Edi Hasibuan said here on Tuesday.

Any threat to the president is basically a threat to state security, he noted.

The former member of the National Police Commission said the man has violated article 104 of the criminal code on treason and article 27 of the law on electronic transactions and information law.

Article 104 of the Criminal Code states that, "Any attempt undertaken with intent to deprive the President or Vice President of his life or his liberty, or to render him unfit to govern, shall be punished with capital punishment or life imprisonment, or a maximum imprisonment of twenty years."

He also called upon the public to be mindful in expressing their opinions, especially if they contain an insult or threat to other parties.

"Death threats against the President can be categorised as treason," the lecturer of law studies at Dirgantara Suryadarma University said.

Earlier on Sunday morning (12/5), the Jakarta Police arrested Hermawan Susanto, the man who was seen in a video making a threat to behead President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

The widely seen video showed Susanto among a crowd in front of the Election Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu) last Friday (10/5), threatening to behead Jokowi.
