Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has hinted that it will choose chief of the party's central executive board Puan Maharani, who is now coordinating minister for human development and culture, to become Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2019-2024 term.

"Based on the mandate of the Legislative Institutions Law (MD3), the first through the fifth winners of the general election are entitled to the posts of DPR RI leadership, proportionally. That's why, as the first winner of the election, PDIP deserves to hold the post of DPR RI Speaker," PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto said, at the office of the PDIP central executive board in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday.

According to the results of the 2019 election vote recount announced by the General Elections Commission (KPU) earlier in the day, PDIP led the vote count by securing 19.33 percent of the total votes.

Hasto said PDIP General Chief Megawati Soekarnoputri will choose a PDIP member to hold the post of House Speaker.

"Mme Puan has experience as a member of the PDIP executive board. She also has experience as a member of DPR RI, and is now holding the executive post as a coordinating minister," he said.

However, the final decision rests with the PDIP general chief. "The public should await the decision from Mrs. General Chief," he said.

The posts of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) for the 2019-2024 term will only be filled in October 2019.
"It is still a long way off. There are many processes and discussions to be held," he said.
